7 February

First Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation Pyotr Serkov held a meeting with Madina Jarbussynova, OSCE Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.

During the meeting, the parties discussed measures aimed at combating human trafficking, the judicial statistics in this sphere, as well as a number of occassions when Russian citizens fell victims to such crimes overseas.

13 – 15 February

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, headed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, visited Cyprus upon invitation of the Supreme Court of the country.

During the visit the delegates met with Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Republic of Cyprus, Myron Nicolatos, President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus and Archbishop Chrysostomos II.

During the meetings the parties repeatedly expressed their interest in developing bilateral cooperation for a more effective protection of the citizens’ rights and freedoms.

16 – 19 March

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, headed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, made an official visit to the Republic of Indonesia.

During their stay, the Russian judges met with Supreme Court Chief Justice Muhammad Hatta Ali, President of Central Jakarta District Court Pontas Efendi and other officials.

The Russian and Indonesian judges agreed that the visit was an important stage in development of professional ties between the two judiciaries.

27 – 31 March

An interregional judicial seminar “Criminal Prosecution and Court Consideration of Cases regarding the Use of the Internet for Perpetration of Terrorist or other Translational Crimes” was organised by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The seminar was attended by Igor Krupnov, head of a panel of judges of the Judicial Chamber for Cases of the Military of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. Justice Krupnov made a report on the consideration of cases regarding the use of the Internet for perpetration of terrorist crimes by Russian courts and a report on the role of state policy in the sphere of criminal and criminal procedure law for the prevention of terrorist crimes.

2 – 3 May

A delegation of Chinese judges headed by Liu Guixiang, Chief Judge of No.1 Circuit Court of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China visited Moscow and Saint-Petersburg.

In Moscow the delegation was received by Pyotr Serkov, First Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.

As the guests were especially interested in the practice of resolution of maritime and cross-border commercial disputes, a meeting with Igor Strelov, President of the Commercial Court for the North-West Circuit, was organised in Saint-Petersburg.

21 – 24 May

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, headed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, made an official visit to the Republic of Croatia.

During the meetings, Chief Justice Lebedev and President Branko Hrvatin of the Supreme Court of Croatia exchanged their experience in court reform, implementation of IT in the administration of justice and the development of e-Justice technologies.

The Russian delegation was also received by Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, President of the Republic of Croatia.

4 – 7 June

The Seventh Conference of Chief Justices of Central and Eastern Europe took place, this time in Hungary, Budapest.

The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation was represented by First Deputy Chief Justice Pyotr Serkov and Secretary of the Plenary Session, Justice Victor Momotov.

The main conference topics were the modern trends in the administration of justice, as well as ways to reduce workload and backlog.

5 June

At the request of the Australian Embassy in Russia, Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev received the Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Peter Tesch, and Justice Martin Daubney, Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and Chair of the International Bar Association Judges' Forum.

14 June

Vyacheslav Lebedev, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, met with a group of Cuban judges undergoing training at the Russian State University of Justice.

During the meeting, Chief Justice Lebedev gave a detailed description of the new ways of improvement of Russia’s judicial system.

15 – 17 June

Sergey Kryukov, Head of the IT Department, and Bogdan Zimnenko, deputy Head of the Department for Systematisation of Legislation and Analysis of Judicial Practice, attended the Focal Points Forum of the Superior Courts Network, launched by the European Court of Human Rights.

The Network, which currently consists of 42 superior courts from 26 countries, is a way to improve international dialogue regarding the application of the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as to efficiently exchange case-law materials.

17 – 21 June

A delegation of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, headed by Chief Justice Vyacheslav Lebedev, visited Rome upon the invitation of the Council of State of the Italian Republic.

The key event of the visit was the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement between the two bodies, aimed at development of professional ties and fostering of cooperation between Russia and Italy in the judicial and other legal spheres.

The programme of stay also included meetings with Andrea Orlando, Minister of Justice, and Donatella Ferranti, President of the Justice Commission at the Chamber of Deputies.

During their visit to the Court of Cassation, Russian judges attended a seminar dedicated to the issues of resolution of commercial disputes.

26 – 28 June

A delegation of the Supreme Court of Thailand, headed by Chief Justice Veerapol Tungsuwan visited the Russian Federation.

Meetings held at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, Moscow Region Court and Saint-Petersburg City Court allowed the parties to discuss organisational issues of administration of justice, issues of training and further training of judges and court staff. Thai judges were also interested in the role of courts in ensuring a favourable investment climate and the features of consideration of economic disputes by Russian courts.

In conclusion, the parties voiced their interest in developing bilateral cooperation and noted the positive dynamics of relations between Russia and Thailand.
